KENT BOWLING NEWS

Editorial - February 2008

The KTBA AGM was held on Saturday 9th February. We welcomed two new members to the council, Kevin Plewis from

Cliftonville, who takes over from Peter Leeke as Junior Sub-Committee Chairman, and David Clinker from Bexleyheath.

We were very disappointed not to have more representatives from the leagues attend the AGM. We are a relatively small

band of people who work very hard for your benefit and we would have been really pleased to meet you and get your

opinions on various aspects of our workings. Apart from everyday admin, paperwork etc involved in sanctioning leagues, we organise and run at least four tournaments a year. We have at least five council meetings each year, which are generally well attended. We keep you informed about County news and events by means of this website and by copies of Bowling News that are provided for those without access to a computer.

Excerpts from the reports given at our 2008 AGM will appear on the website soon!

We have recently sent out a letter to all the leagues asking if bowlers would be prepared to make a donation to the KTBA funds as we are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet! Most leagues have not replied however one replied saying that they give enough money to the BTBA! We are the KTBA, not the BTBA!

We, the KTBA committee, give a lot of our time to running things for you and, more often than not, we do not even claim our expenses. We get some money from the BTBA per person registered in Kent but it is nowhere near enough to allow us to give you the service that we want. Some leagues contribute through the 5p scheme whereby 5p is paid to the KTBA per series bowled - this is collected by the leagues and paid to us at the end of the season. More recently some leagues have agreed to contribute an annual £1 for each player registered with the league. Hopefully, £1 per person per year is not too much to ask. This extra income would greatly assist us to provide our various services to the bowlers of Kent!

We would like to get an idea what your opinion is - please take time to vote in our poll!

Poll now closed!

HIGH SCORES

The Olympic League end of season report shows some excellent scoring last season.

Their new season got off to a great start with Steve Williams rolling a brilliant 280 game. He started the game with a strike and was unlucky to leave a pin standing in the second frame. After sparing the second frame, Steve went on to strike out with 10 in a row. His 1st and 2nd games were both 206, giving him an excellent 692 series.

Rumour has it that Steve Carnall rolled a series consisting of three games of the

same score when recently bowling at Purley.  Quite a remarkable feat in itself

but they were all 235's giving him a 705 series! Well done Steve!

If you know of any other unusual bowling achievements please let us know!

Whitstable YBC have reported some great achievements over the past few weeks.

On Sunday 10th February Hannah Smith won the Classic Singles (Division 4) at Purley having qualified in 3rd position with a 196 avg over 6 games. She went on to bowl a 231 avg over 5 games including a 288 game and 727 series. Fantastic bowling Hannah!

At the South of England 2008 tournament Whitstable YBC came away with 25 trophies.

More details can be found on the Whitstable YBC website at www.whitstable ybc.co.uk

CLUB TOURNAMENT.

The Club Tournament for qualifiers in the 2006-7 season was held at AMF Gravesend on Sunday 27th January 2008.

Once again there was disappointing turnout and we have been giving some serious thought to how we can make the tournament more appealing.

It is very time consuming to organise! Qualifiers names are submitted by league secretaries throughout the year. Some just send a list at the end of the season but quite a few do not submit any at all! Qualifying scores must have been achieved whilst bowling in a sanctioned league or tournament within Kent. A form is available on the website for individuals to notify us of scores.

(See Club Tournament 2008 page for forms).

In the past we have sent personal invites to all

qualifiers via their league secretaries. In future we are considering sending a list of qualifiers and some blank entry forms to league secretaries to give to qualifiers who wish to enter. We are also considering allowing one set of games be used for each "Club" that a person has qualified for at an additional prizefund cost.

If you have any views or ideas we would love to hear them. Come on, speak up!
